Recycling - Why and How? by Mr.G

Recycling may be defined as making new articles by reprocessing used and discarded materials. It reduces the ill effect that the waste has on environment which is generated by our consumption. Recycling also solves the problem of disposition of waste and makes the waste reusable. Bio-degradable waste and garden waste are also treated with micro organisms to make organic manure beneficial for plants.

Why Recycling is necessary?

To keep our environment clean, we need to rigorously follow the policy of recycling and encourage usage of products that are recycled or made from recycled material. In this way, we can prevent dangerous substances going in land fills and polluting our soil and water. It also helps us control global warming. It reduces the need for raw materials and saves valuable energy. Recycling helps in keeping our surroundings and atmosphere healthier. It reduces the impact of waste on our environment. Recycling saves money. 75% of the waste can be recycled and put to use. Clothes, metals, papers, plastic, electronic parts, glasses, and batteries are some of the materials that can be recycled.

How is Recycling done?

There are some steps taken before the waste is recycled.

Waste is first collected from homes, commercial establishments and community dumps. This waste is then segregated and sent for recycling. Manufacturing is the third most important step in process of recycling. Some products are manufactured from completely recycled material or partly recycled material.

Recycled glass bottles are made from clear glass containers, while colored glass containers are used to make colored glass material. Recycling of paper is done by removing the ink and shredding it finely and treating it with chemicals to make new sheets of paper.

In bigger cities, Municipal Center plays a great role in collection and segregation of waste and then sending them to the recycle units. Customers are given incentives to bring material for recycling and usage of recycled products.
