Prevention of Global Warming Begins at Home, Just Like Charity by Nirjara Rustom

"Global Warming" has been called everything, from "the greatest hoax perpetuated on mankind", to "the greatest challenge to face mankind". Whilst I'm not here to debate on this subject, my primary goal is to make you aware of the simple things we can do, that will go a long way to help curb this problem.

We've heard that "charity begins at home". This sentence means that we should first ensure that at least our nearest family has sufficient resources before we give away to charity. It's the same with global warming. Unless we all individually do something about this, there is no point in blaming how careless people are towards this growing problem. You need to start taking the necessary steps first, before advocating and attacking others.

First of all, we need to understand what global warming really is and why it is happening. Global warming is the increase in temperature of the layer of air covering the earth. Increase in CO2 (carbon dioxide) is the primary cause of global warming. So if we can minimize or eliminate this emission as much as possible, we can possibly curb this to some extent. I have listed a few things below which will help you contribute to this issue. We will start with cars and traveling.

1. Tune up and maintain your car regularly; this increases fuel efficiency by 5-7%.

2. Always keep your tires properly inflated. This improves fuel efficiency by 3-4%.

3. For a change, especially when you're planning to go somewhere nearby, walk down or ride a bike. This helps in 2 ways - it reduces carbon emission and secondly, it's also good for your health. I'm not even considering the savings on fuel and parking!

4. Always try to get the most bang from a car trip by combining errands, meetings, shopping sprees, outings, dropping children to school, traveling to work, etc.

5. Carpool to work if you can. Same goes for dropping children to school - create a group of neighboring children in the same school and have a fixed day of commuting responsibility for each of the group.

6. Use public transport as much as you can. Try to avoid your car at least one day of the week, when you go to work.

7. Try to drive more evenly, with less sudden brakes or hard accelerations. Also maintain your speed at the recommended fuel efficient speed.
Other things you can do at home:

1. Reduce / eliminate meat and switch over to more organic and vegetarian food, which requires less energy to produce.

2. Use strong cloth bags for shopping and not plastic or paper. The latter not only lasts less uses, but are more prone to getting suddenly torn and resulting in a lot of inconvenience and possible damage.

3. Don't use a dryer to dry clothes unless it is urgent. Use the old fashioned way of drying them in natural air.

4. If you're in cold countries, lower the thermostat of your heating system by a few degrees where the cold is bearable. Better still; wear some good sweaters so you don't need a lot of artificial warming.

5. If you're in hot countries, choose an energy efficient air conditioner. Increase the thermostat by a few degrees where you don't feel the heat. Wear cotton clothes so you don't need a lot of cooling. A quick 2 minute shower can also instantly cool you down.

6. Insulate your water heater as well as the walls and ceilings of your home.

7. Replace your most frequently used incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent ones.

8. If your refrigerator is over 10 years old, its time to replace it. The new ones currently
available are a lot more energy efficient. Similarly, washing machines are also available in energy efficient models.

9. Don't use your washing machine or dish washer unless you have enough load. This will reduce the frequency of use and save energy.

10. Stop using screen savers in your computer, they do not save energy. Instead, switch off the monitor and / or set the power settings to switch it off after a predetermined period of inactivity. If you cannot shut down the computer regularly, keep it on sleep or standby mode whenever you're not using it.

11. Try to make your children understand the global warming problem and encourage them to switch off lights and fans when not in use. Reward them with little gifts when they do this regularly. Also encourage them not to burst crackers. Give them the money instead and let them save it separately, and then show them what wonderful things they can buy, instead of the money going up in smoke!

Is anybody sure about the cause of global warming? One thing is certain. The answer to THAT question is NO.

A lot of people would say it is air pollution, and the newest president of the USA seems to think so. Can a new government save future generations from global catastrophe? A market for cleaner-burning fuels might help stop climate change and President Obama's administration could make this possible. So a number of environmental groups and lobbyist groups hope.

One such special interest group is known as Ceros. This coalition of environmental organizations and investors wishes for Obama to curtail global warming. They figure he could pass legislation to reduce green house gas emissions by 25% below 1990 levels before 2020, and they might be right.

One step in achieving this end is "honest accounting of financial risks that companies and investors face from climate change," according to Ceros. Another might be dispensing with a system of emissions credits to force this honest accounting instead of providing an avenue for deep-pocketed corporations from easily buying their way out of responsibility.
Who wouldn't want Barack Obama's government to take charge in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and rates of deforestation? Is this even the right person for the job? No one person can do it all, of course.

According to Obama, "The issue of climate change is one that we ignore at our own peril. There may still be disputes about exactly how much is naturally occurring, but what we can be scientifically certain of is that our continued use of fossil fuels is pushing us to a point of no return. And unless we free ourselves from a dependence on these fossil fuels and chart a new course on energy in this country, we are condemning future generations to global catastrophe."
This tells us that he has some regard for scientific research, and that he believes we CAN do something about global warming. Applying science correctly provides a good start to arriving at a solution. And scientists will play a big role in finding a solution, even if that solution is simply a "wait and see what happens".

A scientific approach includes taking off the blinders and thinking creatively to arrive at one or several solutions. Focussing on carbon in initiatives such as the National Low Carbon Fuel Standard, which is trying to find "clean" fuels instead of the ones we currently consume, takes the sights off other climate drivers and other greenhouse gases. Water vapour being chief amongst those.

It has been said that the sun is the only source of global warming. A new energy economy proposed by Obama would rely on renewable energy such as solar and wind, both of which depend on sunlight. Other documents have said that extra sunspot activity can reduce cloud cover, resulting in a more heated planet/atmosphere system.

Furthermore, An Inconvenient Truth shows Al Gore putting carbon dioxide as the culprit as far as global warming is concerned. Anthropogenic carbon dioxide. But a credible theory of climate variations points to Milankovitch Cycles, where changes in earth-heating patterns occur in a recurring pattern.

Maybe Obama got in at the right time with his campaign promises and we will see improvements take place that would have happened without anybody's effort at all. Barack will certainly get the credit, though.

In a recent interview with Time Magazine Al Gore said, “When I was in the Snow and Ice Data Center receiving a full briefing on the polar ice caps, afterwards I would turn on my TV and there were two networks with the bulletin: Britney Spears loses custody of her children. We’re living in a madhouse if our priorities focus on the embalming of Anna Nicole Smith, or the trial of O.J. Simpson, while we ignore the greatest crisis this nation has ever faced.”

The definition of insanity is when a person is a danger to themselves or others because they do not understand the nature and consequences of their actions. In 1998 under intense pressure from their main sponsors the big oil companies, Bill and Hillary Clinton refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. Now the U.S., the world’s largest polluter, under the leadership of George Bush has gutted the Bali Climate Change Agreement of all substance. Hillary Clinton just loaned $5M dollars to her campaign. This money came from the $10 Million dollars per year being payed by the Emir of Dubai to Bill Clinton for doing absolutely nothing. The leaders of Saudi Arabia gave $10 million to the Bill Clinton Presidential Library and hundreds of millions to the Bush family.

In return for the money, the Bush and Clinton families have agreed to allow Saudi Arabia and Dubai to buy America’s banks, (Hillary O.K.’d this in the Nevada debate), part of Daimler Chrysler, large stakes in America’s corporations, America’s ports, (remember Bush and Cheney pushing for the Dubai ports deal?), and the Bush and Clinton families have agreed to kill any world environment treaties like Kyoto and Bali which would hamper the Saudi and Persian Gulf States’ exporting of 10 million barrels per day at $100 per barrel, a billion dollars every day. How did Saudi Arabia and Dubai buy the Bush and Clinton families so cheaply? Did they buy them at Wal Mart?

Pope Benedict XVI is a champion of the environmental movement and has urged all Catholics to become environmentalists. The Catholic Church has taken a firm stance against global warming. Pope Benedict XVI has warned against the seductive nature of science. Our own experience has been that Bill Clinton has repeatedly demonstrated an inability to resist temptation. God the Father carved in stone, “Don’t Murder, or else I will punish you, your children, your grandchildren and your great grandchildren.” Don’t Murder means don’t murder people or poison to death the parts people are made of, air, water and earth.

Charles Moore said this week that on our present course the Pacific Plastic Stew will double in size over the next 10 years. Our experience shows us that if Hillary Clinton, a puppet of the oil executives, bought and paid for by the oil barons, becomes President, then when she leaves office, the entire Pacific Ocean and its beaches will be a deadly plastic garbage dump. The end of tourism will be the least of our worries.

Professor David Karl, an oceanographer at the University of Hawaii says that the plastic is not biodegrading, and modern plastic is so durable that 50 year old plastic is in the soup. Tony Andrady, a chemist with the U.S. based Research Triangle Institute says that “Every little piece of plastic manufactured in the past 50 years that made it into the ocean is still out there.” The Pacific Ocean now has billions of tiny plastic pellets, nurdles, which combine with man made poison petrochemicals, the toxic pesticide DDT, which are eaten by the fish on your child’s dinner plate.

White females over 50 and Latinos are handing Hillary Clinton the Presidency because they trust the bought off by the oil executives, corrupt, lying Clintons who got us all into this mess. White females over 50 and Latinos say that Bill and Hillary Clinton have more experience than Barack Obama, as if the number of years in politics means wisdom, and sound judgment. Look at your child’s globe. In fact the Earth only has one ocean. People think that times were good under the Clintons, in the time that the world was turning into a poisonous greenhouse and the ocean was turning into a deadly plastic garbage dump.

The Bush Clinton American Royal family for the past 20 years tried to sweep this all under the rug. George Bush had Philip Cooney of Exxon Mobil change scientific research to say that there was no human made global warming, and Republicans have been duped into believing this. Now the kaka has hit the fan. The toxic plastic and poison chemicals are now contaminating the American rivers and lakes too. Cesar Chavez was a Mexican American civil rights activist. Which right is more important than the right to poison free air, soil, water and food? Which Democratic Presidential candidate voted to waste American lives and money in Iraq as her Saudi Arabian and Persian Gulf benefactors lined her pockets with gold for the right to poison your children to death?

The Clinton and Bush families are the canidates of change. They have changed the Garden of Eden into a toxic wasteland.

Here is what Rudy Giuliani said to the people of Waterloo, Iowa, yesterday:

Rudy Giuliani: “9/11, 9/11. What a hit job. They tried to do to me what they did to Sonny Corleone. This has taken a huge toll on my new mistress, according to her security detail. The NYPD is spending so much money protecting people connected to me now that my campaign contributors are asking for protection. I told them, ‘There are no money back guarantees and I told you that going in. This whole security thing is much ado about nothing, just like global warming. In actuality the earth’s sky does have a ceiling but you cannot see it when standing on the earth’s surface. You can only see it when you look at the earth’s blue sky from the international space station and then you can see where the earth’s ceiling meets the black sky of cold space. That is the ceiling of the earth’s blue sky. In my first term in office I intend to send couple construction guys up to the international space station to drill a hole in the ceiling of the earth’s sky to let the greenhouse gases escape. Budda Bing Budda Bang forget about it.”

At that point Mrs. Mildred R. Crabsnapple of Spirit Lake, Iowa asked Rudy Giuliani, “Mayor Giuliani, According to Henry M. Paulson Jr., the Secretary of the U.S. Treaury Department, our $10 trillion debt is like a ticking time bomb about to blow our economy into the dirt permanently, and there will be no money for social security, health care or education. How do you plan to solve that problem?”

Rudy Giuliani replied, “Hi Mildred it’s great to see you. How’s your daughter Donna doing? Security O.K.? Social Security. I have a holistic plan. Peace, The Balm To Soothe Troubled Lives And Times

In his masterpiece, "Man's Search for Meaning," Viktor Frankl writes, "Every age has its own collective neurosis and every age needs its own psychotherapy to cope with it." There is a collective neurosis in our world today, it is the cry for peace emanating from individuals, groups, communities and nations, impacting the mass consciousness.

The cries and marches for peace, power and freedom that marked recent decades, present a backdrop for today's human conditions of stress, anxiety, insecurity and turmoil. There are as many civil wars and wars between nations. From the individual perspective, the cry for peace is heralded as respite from the turbulence of today's hectic lifestyle. In the past four to five decades we have lived in such a way as to create challenging situations in our lives and create even more havoc as we try to solve the resulting problems.

There is a popular bumper sticker that states, "Peace begins within," and a hymn that is sung in thousands of churches world-wide on Sundays, "Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me." Yes, peace begins within the heart and mind of every person. Until we reignite the flame of peace, love and unity there can be no lasting peace in individuals, among people and nations of the world.

Frankl, who lived a life shaped by war, states that, "Man is questioned by life and he can only answer to life by answering to his own life, to life he can only respond by being responsible." The question of whether or not we have lived responsibly in recent decades, has spawned national and international debates. With the widely reported impending consequences of global warming, catastrophes of war and economic collapses, the outlook is bleak. These impact the human condition as they are fed in large daily doses at breakfast, dinner and all throughout the day. Conditions of fear, stress, anger, frustration, rage, insecurity and strife are the results.

For individuals to have lasting peace they must live their lives from the inside out. This idea might send off alarm bells with shouts of hogwash. Well, let us see how real this is and how easily it can be accomplished. "Be in the world but not of the world," was prescribed by one of the great enlightened spiritual minds, eons ago. Is this possible you may ask, I dare to say it is.

To the degree that we become caught up in the dictates and excesses of the outside world, is the extent to which we will experience chaos and turbulence and lack inner peace.

I had first hand experience of this two decades ago. For a while I worked as a journalist and it is a well known fact that the profession is demanding and can be stressful. My publisher and editor was an excess living, driven workaholic, who was always in conflicts, off deadlines and antagonistic to life and everyone in it. He would often ask me how I remained so calm and in control, "Nothing seems to bother you," he would state. My response was always the same, "Be in the world but not of the world." He was fascinated by the idea and wanted to know how I accomplish that. He had no knowledge of spiritual matters and showed no interest in learning. He later became an appendage who watched, studied and leaned on me for answers and solutions. Years later he became feeble, sick and broken.

Stress is a natural response to the excesses that overwhelm our physical and emotional capabilities and life. The real or reality of us lies within us. Strength, courage, peace and power all emanate from within. Our minds that create the thoughts that become things are within us. The learned and great apostle Paul admonishes us not to conform to the world but to be transformed by the renewing of our mind, that we may prove what is the good, acceptable and perfect will of God. He knew over zealousness, rejection, defeat and triumph, but through renewal of his mind, he left us a legacy in spiritual transformation.

When we conform to the world we allow the dictates of the world and its appearances to control our lives. The real of man is spiritual and divine, not the ego driven personality that responds to the whims and fancies of every Tom, Dick and Harry. Stress and conflict occur when the inner spiritual self and its outer personality self are in opposing viewpoints.

Frankl theorizes that mans search for meaning is a primary force in his life which is unique and specific in that it must and can be fulfilled by him alone. Our greatness as human beings lies in our ability to change our minds and the conditions of our lives. What is so great about living in a free, democratic country is that it affords us the privilege of freedom to be all we want to be. Individually we must desire freedom and make the choice for freedom as we live our life. The great author and self help guru, Stuart Wilde, teaches that we should "Concentrate on ourselves and leave the world alone. As we strengthen ourselves we save all of humanity, because we are all linked to one another."

We must desire a change from the stress and turbulent lifestyle we live today. We must dare to rise up, declare, pursue and claim peace for ourselves. This will impact the lives of family and friends and spread out to our communities and our world. The pursuit of peace is perhaps the most followed path to spiritual enlightenment. A peaceful disposition calms the rough and tossed seas of turbulence, strife, fear and discontent.

The book, "Anchor in the spirit as God Beings - More than Mere Human," is presented as an easy to follow guidebook for spiritual transformation. It clearly sets out the conditions that support transformation and offers major tools that will help achieve it. Al Gore has decided not to run for the Presidency of the United States of America. He explained that in 1997, when he begged the 100 Senators to ratify the Kyoto Treaty to combat climate change and global warming only 1, ONE, senator agreed, and 99 senators said, "NO". In the old days for 5 million years our ancestors knew that poison from snakes was deadly. Today our elders have become so detached from reality that 99% of them are saying "Yes" to poisoning the air, water and earth. To love a person, to respect a person is to not poison their air, water and earth.

The self righteous pro life Republican moral majority are acting as though they would bee happier if Jamie Lynn Spears did not have a child growing inside of her, that it would be better if Jamie Lynn Spears had gotten rid of the child. Pope Benedict XVI forbids Jamie Lynn Spears from aborting her child. Al Gore refuses to run for President now because he says that the average person could care less about climate change and global warming.

In his recent interview with Time Magazine, Nobel Laureate Al Gore said, "Everything I do is within the context of priority number one: how can I help contribute to a solution to the climate crisis? When I was in the snow and ice data center, receiving a full briefing on the polar ice caps, afterwards I would turn on my TV and there were two networks with bulletins: 'Britney Spears loses custody of her children'. We're living in a madhouse if our priorities focus on the embalming of Anna Nicole Smith, or the trial of O.J. Simpson, while we ignore the greatest crisis this nation has ever faced, climate change."

Pope Benedict XVI and Prince Ghazi are calling for common respect among the younger generation of Christians and Muslims. Al Gore says that what is needed is a grassroots movement for climate change and global warming to protect against climate change and resulting world wars fighting over water and soil after desertification. Grassroots means the common people, people best representing the basic interests of the people. Basic means essential. What could be more essential than clean, pure, unpoisoned air, water and earth?
